Tips on Communicating with Adults on the Autism Spectrum
Sometimes, it can be challenging to talk with an adult on the autism spectrum whether they’d be a family member, coworker, classmate, or a neighbor. Homecare agency in Delaware county understands how much clear communication can get so difficult.
As a provider of adult autism services, we have thought of certain approaches when talking with an adult on the autism spectrum such as the following:
- Address them as an adult, not a child.
Never assume that a person has limited cognitive skills. His disability might just be more language-based and not cognitive, so he may able to understand the conversation but just find it hard to verbally respond. - Take time to listen.
Just as the ASD professionals in a provider of home healthcare in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, be an active listener. Listening shows that you care for and support them. - Patiently wait for a response.
When someone doesn’t immediately respond to your question, do not easily conclude they don’t understand or hear you. They may just be needing a little more time to absorb and process the information for them to finally respond. - Avoid using too personal or familiar words.
This especially the case when you are a part of community inclusion and talking to people you barely know, avoid using overly familiar words such as “sweetie” or “honey” as it can come across as disrespectful; more so for adults on the autism spectrum trying their best to build their independence.
